200 Hatha Yoga Teacher Training

The Teacher Training Program is appropriate for anyone who would like to deepen their personal yoga practice, cultivate greater self-awareness, and learn the art of effective and inspirational teaching. The program is designed to help individuals grow and evolve as inspired students of life and Yoga teachers. Our emphasis is on developing an insightful and intelligent practice rooted in alignment and connection to Self and others.

Kula Annex’s 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training was established in 2009 and is one of Toronto’s most comprehensive Teacher Training Programs (Yoga Alliance). Over 300 teachers have passed through our doors since 2009, and emerged as confident and talented teachers and practitioners.

The Teacher Training program is carefully crafted by Tracy dePass, Olivia Hill, Kiran Sohal, Nya Daley, Jess McIntyre, and guest teachers. All five teachers are dedicated to providing their specialized knowledge in an accessible way.

We pride ourselves on our approachable atmosphere, which is built on a strong culture of community and education “that is rare to find in the modern, yoga world” (Christopher Wallis, The Mattamayura Institute).

Program Prerequisite: A developed and dedicated yoga practice, for a minimum of one year. The training requires a willingness to connect deeply with the yoga tradition and to explore with an open heart.

“The year I took Kula’s YTT program I was also enrolled full-time in University, as well as working a part-time serving job to pay the bills. I was initially concerned about the added workload, but found my time spent in the program to be energizing, inspiring, and when needed, restorative and nourishing to my soul.

It never felt like an added workload, but instead, it was an environment where I could take time to reconnect with myself, and the supportive community of my teachers and peers. For me, this inner-grounding work seemed to create more space for the rest of life, providing a renewed outlook towards whatever external ‘demands’ were being thrown my way.

The teachers were wonderful at reading the energy of the group, and so were able to adapt their teachings to meet the needs of the students in the moment. It was clear from the beginning that they were here to see us succeed, in whatever way ‘success’ meant to us. They were steadfastly supportive throughout our entire journey, and even beyond graduation.

The beauty of Kula’s YTT program is, not only are you in a place that provides an excellent well-rounded teacher training program, but you are building community and relationships that will last you a lifetime!”

Kula YTT Student 2019 & YTT Teaching Assistant 2020

“I was part of the 2020 YTT class at Kula. Of course, when we started in January, we had no idea that we were going to end up doing most of the program online. It certainly had its ups and downs, but the faculty did an amazing job of transitioning us to Zoom and adjusting the program to meet the needs of my cohort.

They were really flexible to change the weekend class schedule as Zoom fatigue set in. I felt like they were open to our feedback throughout the process. The benefit for the class of 2021 is that Olivia and Cynthia have been through this and learned from the experience.

There were drawbacks, like not being able to practice hands on adjustments, but there were also benefits. Teaching online is more challenging than teaching in person, so you really get a masterclass in clear cueing and creating a welcoming and safe learning environment for your students.

I’ve done a couple of online trainings now, and I think that Kula did a really excellent job of maintaining the real class room feel online. Having the community of my classmates and the weekly Tuesday evening classes gave such a sense of structure and normalcy through this strange time. I would definitely recommend studying at Kula in 2021.”

Course Curriculum:
Fundamentals of Yoga: Asana, Meditation, Pranayama

The fundamentals of yoga will help students develop their personal practice both on and off the mat. The students will gain a solid foundation in asana practice, including: general form, breath integration, and anatomical and energetic nuances of postures.

The curriculum includes a comprehensive study of principal asana (postures) that encompass standing poses, hip openers, arm balances, backbends, inversions, twists, seated postures, and restorative poses.

Students will gain an appreciation for the importance of Pranayama (breath work), and learn teaching skills that will allow them to communicate this vital component of the yoga practice.

You will also learn the techniques and disciplines that will allow you to build and sustain a regular meditation practice throughout the program and beyond. Other components of the program, such as human anatomy, posture modification, and philosophy, will be interwoven into embodied practice.

Upon completion of the Fundamentals of Yoga, students will have an enriched understanding of mindful and efficient practice that optimally supports the needs of their mind, body, and spirit.

History and Philosophy of Yoga

Yoga has a rich and varied history, which encompasses different philosophical and religious traditions from classical to contemporary teachings. In History and Philosophy of Yoga, you will study Yoga texts and practices, with practical exercises to learn and experience these ideas. Students can expect a thorough introduction to the History and Philosophy of Yoga, how it has evolved since ancient times through to today, and learn from teachers to respect the tradition on both academic and personal levels.

Anatomy and Physiology

Becoming a skillful Yoga teacher requires a thorough understanding of the human body. In Anatomy and Physiology, you will learn the biomechanics of the human body and how they pertain to asana. You will develop a thorough understanding of the systems, muscles, and joints of the body, and how to apply this knowledge in teaching. In addition, you will learn to deconstruct postures from an anatomical perspective and modify them to benefit individual students.

The Art of Teaching

Students will learn how to apply their knowledge of Yoga philosophy, anatomy, asana, meditation and pranayama into skillfully teaching inspired and intelligent classes. You will understand how to sequence a class, and adapt your personal teaching style to the needs of your students. YTT graduates will be able to modify postures appropriately, using props and hands on adjustments. To hone your skills and increase your confidence, you will practice teaching your peers and select guests, and you will have the opportunity to observe in regular classes at Kula. You will learn to confidently take the seat of the teacher and care for your own wellbeing as you serve your community.

Observation

To maximize the learning experience, Teacher Trainees will observe classes at Kula. In the six months following the program, graduates have the opportunity to teach Kula Karma and Community classes, that are specifically designed to give our graduates exposure to studio teaching.

Karma Classes

As a demonstration to their commitment to study and to deepening one’s practice, Teacher Trainees are expected to take a minimum of 1 additional class per week at Kula during the program. Unlimited yoga classes are included in the program.
