200 Hour Hatha

Yoga Teacher Training

The Teacher Training Program is appropriate for anyone who would like to deepen their personal yoga practice, cultivate greater self-awareness, and learn the art of effective and inspirational teaching. The program is designed to help individuals grow and evolve as inspired student of life and Yoga teachers. Our emphasis is on developing an insightful and intelligent practice rooted in alignment and connection to Self and others.

Kula Annex’s 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training was established in 2009 and is one of Toronto’s most comprehensive Teacher Training Programs (Yoga Alliance). Over 250 teachers have passed through our doors since 2009, and emerged as confident and talented teachers and practitioners.

The Teacher Training program is carefully crafted by Prem Keval, Geeta Wadehra, Olivia Hill and, Kiran Sohal. All four teachers are dedicated to providing their specialized knowledge in an accessible way.

We pride ourselves on our approachable atmosphere, which is built on a strong culture of community and education “that is rare to find in the modern, yoga world” (Christopher Wallis, The Mattamayura Institute).

Program Prerequisite: At least one year practicing yoga. The training requires a willingness to connect deeply with the yoga tradition and to explore with an open heart. We don’t require you to have extensive knowledge or understanding of all the postures – that’s what we’re here to teach you!

Course Curriculum:
Fundamentals of Yoga: Asana, Meditation, Pranayama

The fundamentals of yoga will help students develop their personal practice both on and off the mat. The students will gain a solid foundation in asana practice, including: general form, breath integration, and anatomical and energetic nuances of postures.

The curriculum includes a comprehensive study of principal asana (postures) that encompass standing poses, hip openers, arm balances, backbends, inversions, twists, seated postures, and restorative poses.

Students will gain an appreciation for the importance of Pranayama (breath work), and learn teaching skills that will allow them to communicate this vital component of the yoga practice.

You will also learn the techniques and disciplines that will allow you to build and sustain a regular meditation practice throughout the program and beyond. Other components of the program, such as human anatomy, posture modification, and philosophy, will be interwoven into embodied practice.

Upon completion of the Fundamentals of Yoga, students will have an enriched understanding of mindful and efficient practice that optimally supports the needs of their mind, body, and spirit.

History and Philosophy of Yoga

Yoga has a rich and varied history, which encompasses different philosophical and religious traditions from classical to contemporary teachings. In History and Philosophy of Yoga, you will study Yoga texts and practices, with practical exercises to learn and experience these ideas. Students can expect a thorough introduction to the History and Philosophy of Yoga, how it has evolved since ancient times through to today, and learn from teachers to respect the tradition on both academic and personal levels.

Anatomy and Physiology

Becoming a skillful Yoga teacher requires a thorough understanding of the human body. In Anatomy and Physiology, you will learn the biomechanics of the human body and how they pertain to asana. You will develop a thorough understanding of the systems, muscles, and joints of the body, and how to apply this knowledge in teaching. In addition, you will learn to deconstruct postures from an anatomical perspective and modify them to benefit individual students.

The Art of Teaching

Students will learn how to apply their knowledge of Yoga philosophy, anatomy, asana, meditation and pranayama into skillfully teaching inspired and intelligent classes. You will understand how to sequence a class, and adapt your personal teaching style to the needs of your students. YTT graduates will be able to modify postures appropriately, using props and hands on adjustments. To hone your skills and increase your confidence, you will practice teaching your peers and select guests, and you will have the opportunity to observe in regular classes at Kula. You will learn to confidently take the seat of the teacher and care for your own wellbeing as you serve your community.

Observation

To maximize the learning experience, Teacher Trainees will observe classes at Kula. In the six months following the program, graduates have the opportunity to teach Kula Karma and Community classes, that are specifically designed to give our graduates exposure to studio teaching.

Karma Classes

As a demonstration to their commitment to study and to deepening one’s practice, Teacher Trainees are expected to take a minimum of 1 additional class per week at Kula during the program. Unlimited yoga classes are included in the program.

Testimonials
Martina S.

Participating in the Kula Yoga teacher training was a transformative journey, an experience that combined deep knowledge, storytelling, and practical wisdom in the most inspiring way.

Prem brought clarity and strength to our understanding of asanas, guiding us with precision and by setting an aspirational example for the physical foundations of yoga, while always grounded in a deep understanding of anatomy as well as yoga’s origins and meaning.

Olivia’s masterful sequencing and teaching style elevated our practice, showing us how to craft classes that flow with intention and grace.

Kiran’s storytelling during philosophy and history lessons added vibrant color and context, making complex topics feel alive and deeply relevant.

And Geeta’s practical training in meditation and pranayama grounded us in the subtle, powerful practices that connect breath, mind, and spirit.

Each teacher brought their unique gifts, and I’ll carry what I learned into my continued practice and teaching. I’m deeply grateful for this experience and highly recommend this training to anyone seeking to deepen their practice and share yoga with authenticity and skill.

From the first day I inquired about this program to the last day of class, I felt welcomed by both the instructors and my classmates. Kula’s YTT program fosters a warm environment where everyone can learn, grow, and share without fear or judgment.

The program’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility was important to me as a racialized graduate student juggling school, work and the YTT program. By providing scholarships for BIPOC students and accommodating students of all backgrounds, Kula ensures that yoga
education was accessible to a more diverse group of people. This not only enriches our learning experience but also reflects the values of yoga in tangible ways.

The space for open dialogue in the classroom is something I genuinely appreciated. The instructors encourage us to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions, even when the topics are challenging.

What also stands out to me is how accommodating the instructors were.
They genuinely understand that we all have commitments outside of the training, whether it is work, school, or personal life, and ensure that they are there to help us overcome any challenges we might have.

The training also grew my personal practice by allowing me to learn about the spiritual and philosophical foundations of yoga in community, which now has a huge impact on the way I experience daily life and understand the world. Overall, the training was more than just a certification for me; it was and is an ongoing journey of personal and collective growth facilitated by a learning experience rooted in a caring community.

I wanted to give you a little update on my yoga teacher journey post graduation—I got a job as a teacher!

I passed my audition last week by teaching a slow flow on Sunday evening and following everyone’s feedback, the owner signed me up right away!

Everyone said they felt so relaxed and had the best sleep they’ve had in ages afterwards. I’m now teaching 4 classes a week at a small gym in a very nice neighbourhood in Stockholm.

I’m also teaching private classes and working on my online platform, which will be a great tool in promoting my yoga classes and offerings.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for all of your help and mentorship throughout the past couple of months—even post graduation! I wouldn’t be here without you and I hope I make you proud!!!

I wanted to share that I taught my first in person class this past Friday at a studio near my house and it was incredible.

Was super nervous leading up to it and then when I arrived it just felt so exciting. The class went amazing and I received so much positive feedback. It was so beautiful to hold space for others.

Thank you both so much for all your support and mentorship that brought me to this place! My heart is so happy.

It was honestly such a fun experience!! And I am excited to keep trying.

Your support and kind words mean so much to me. It’s been so fun stepping into the role of teacher and I’m excited to continue to grow my confidence & keep learning. The best part about it has been the feeling of helping and supporting others!!

Best decision I’ve ever made was taking Kula’s YTT program.
